Two-way network tariffs in FY27

Follow

From FY27, most network distributors that Amber operates in will offer a two-way tariff (sometimes called a solar export or CER tariff).

While the exact nature of these tariffs differs between networks, the general structure is an export bonus during the evening peak, and an export penalty during the middle of the day. Some networks offer evening peak bonuses up to +15c/kWh.

For more information on tariffs, see this explainer. To find out what tariff you are currently on, see this explainer.

This article provides information about these tariffs in each network, including steps for how to opt-in to switching onto them. To check which network you are on, open the Amber app, tap on the ‘Settings’ tab, and see the first line of the ‘Tariff Information’ section.

Select your network below to jump to the relevant section

Powercor

Powercor's new two-way network tariff is Residential CER (PRCER). It rewards you for exporting in the evening when the grid needs energy most during summer and winter, and applies a small charge for exporting in the middle of the day during the higher-solar months when the grid is already saturated.

Details

Export rewards and charges:

  • Export reward: 7c/kWh bonus for exports during 4pm-9pm, only during Dec-Feb and Jun-Aug (the summer and winter peak seasons). So for example, in those months if you were to export while FiTs are 5c/kWh during this time, you would instead get 12c/kWh.
  • Export charge: 1c/kWh penalty for exports during 11am-4pm, every day from September to May (only applies above the free threshold of 1kWh/day).

Network import charges on this tariff:

  • Peak hours: 27.86c/kWh between 4-9pm, during Dec-Feb and Jun-Aug. 20.80c/kWh between 4-9pm, during other months
  • Saver hours: 1c/kWh between 11am-4pm (cheaper grid imports during the middle of the day)
  • Off peak hours: 4.20c/kWh during 9pm-11am

SmartShift will automatically factor in these export  rewards and charges when deciding when your battery exports - so you don’t need to manage this yourself.

For more information on the rates, see Powercor's tariff schedule for FY27.

Who this tariff is likely to benefit

This is general information only, not personalised advice. Your actual benefit will depend on your usage patterns:

  • ✅ You have enough battery capacity to export to the grid between 4pm-9pm through the summer and winter months
  • ✅ You can self-consume your solar between 11am-4pm to keep middle-of-the-day exports low (hot water systems, pool pumps, EV charging, excess battery capacity and solar curtailment all help here)
  • ❌ Don't switch if you regularly import a lot of power during the evening peak, or can't manage solar exports during the day.

Requesting to switch tariff

As we require legal consent to switch your tariff, if you'd like us to update your tariff to Powercor's Residential CER (PRCER), fill in the below form with your details and click ‘Submit’.

REQUEST TARIFF CHANGE NOW - POWERCOR (PRCER)

We will send you a confirmation email once we have raised the tariff change request with Powercor. It generally takes less than two weeks for the change to show up in the market. Once it's done, the new rates will appear in your app and SmartShift will factor them into when your battery exports.

Things to consider before switching

  • Powercor allows two network tariff changes per year, so if you switch and decide it's not for you, you'll have the option to move again
  • There's no “no worse off” guarantee, so it's worth thinking about whether your usage pattern is a good fit before making the move
  • The export reward only applies in Dec-Feb and Jun-Aug, while the export charge applies from September through May. So in the shoulder months (Sep-Nov and Mar-May) you'll be charged for daytime exports without getting a reward in the evening
  • If you often import during the 4pm-9pm window, this may not be the right tariff for you

CitiPower

CitiPower's new two-way network tariff is Residential CER (CRCER). It rewards you for exporting in the evening when the grid needs energy most during summer and winter, and applies a small charge for exporting in the middle of the day during the higher-solar months when the grid is already saturated.

  • Export charge: 1c/kWh penalty for exports during 11am-4pm, every day from September to May (only applies above the free threshold of 1kWh/day).

Network import charges on this tariff:

  • Peak hours: 27.81c/kWh between 4-9pm, during Dec-Feb and Jun-Aug. 19.33c/kWh between 4-9pm, during other months
  • Saver hours: 1c/kWh between 11am-4pm (cheaper grid imports during the middle of the day)
  • Off peak hours: 3.27c/kWh during 9pm-11am

SmartShift will automatically factor in these export rewards and charges when deciding when your battery exports - so you don’t need to manage this yourself.

Jemena

Jemena's new two-way network tariff is Residential Export (A10E). It rewards you for exporting in the evening when the grid needs energy most, and applies a small charge for exporting in the middle of the day when the grid is already saturated with solar.

Details

Export rewards and charges:

  • Export reward: 15c/kWh bonus for exports during 4pm-9pm, every day of the week. So for example, if you were to export while FiTs are 5c/kWh during this time, you would instead get 20c/kWh.
  • Export charge: 3c/kWh penalty for exports during 11am-4pm, every day of the week (only applies above the free threshold of 1kWh/day).

Network import charges on this tariff:

  • Peak hours: 18.208c/kWh between 4-9pm
  • Solar soak: 1c/kWh between 11am-4pm (cheaper grid imports during the middle of the day)
  • Off peak hours: 4.551c/kWh at all other times

REQUEST TARIFF CHANGE NOW - JEMENA (A10E)

We will send you a confirmation email once we have raised the tariff change request with Jemena. It usually takes less than two weeks for the change to show up in the market. Once it's done, the new rates will appear in your app and SmartShift will factor them into when your battery exports.

Things to consider before switching

  • Jemena limits customers to only one network tariff change per year - this is a distributor rule that Amber can’t override. That means once you switch, you won't be able to change again until 12 months have passed, regardless of whether your circumstances change
  • There's no “no worse off” guarantee, so it's worth thinking about whether your usage pattern is a good fit before making the move
  • If you often import during the 4pm-9pm window, this may not be the right tariff for you.
  • The export charges in the middle of the day are also higher than other VIC networks (3c/kWh vs 1c/kWh), so it's worth a closer look and careful consideration of your usage before joining.

Essential Energy

Essential Energy's two-way tariff is Residential Solar Export (BLNREX2). It rewards you for exporting in the evening when the grid needs energy most, and applies a small charge for exporting in the middle of the day when the grid is already saturated with solar.

Details

Customers on this tariff will be switched to the import (Sun Soaker BLNRSS2) and export (BLNREX2) component of this tariff.

Export rewards and charges:

  • Export reward: 11.7212c/kWh bonus for exports during 5pm-8pm, every day of the week. So for example, if you were to export while FiTs are 5c/kWh during this time, you would instead get 16.7212c/kWh.
  • Export charge: 0.8277c/kWh for exports during 10am-3pm (only applies above the free threshold of 7.5kWh/day).

Network import charges on this tariff:

  • Peak hours: 17.9566c/kWh during 7am-10am and 3pm-10pm
  • Off peak hours: 6.3275/kWh during all other times

SmartShift will automatically factor in these export rewards and charges when deciding when your battery exports - so you don’t need to manage this yourself.

For the full rate breakdown from Essential Energy, see their 2026-27 network price list and notes.

Who this tariff is likely to benefit

  • ✅ You can self-consume your solar between 10am-3pm to keep middle-of-the-day exports low (hot water systems, pool pumps, EV charging, excess battery capacity and solar curtailment are great options)
  • ✅ You can hold off on big energy use after 5pm so you have plenty to export during the evening peak
  • ❌ Don't join if you regularly import a lot of power during peak times (3pm-10pm)

Ready to switch?

As we require legal consent to switch your tariff, if you'd like us to update your tariff to the two-way Residential Solar Export tariff, fill in the below form with your details and click ‘Submit’.

REQUEST TARIFF CHANGE NOW - ESSENTIAL (BLNREX2)

We will send you a confirmation email once we have raised the tariff change request with Essential Energy. Switches take effect from the start of the next month and can't be backdated. Once it's done, the new export reward will show in your app and SmartShift will factor it into when your battery exports.

Things to consider before switching

  • Essential Energy limits customers to one network tariff change per year - this is a distributor rule that Amber can’t override. That means once you switch, you won't be able to change again until 12 months have passed, regardless of whether your circumstances change
  • There's no “no worse off” guarantee on this tariff, so it's worth thinking about whether your usage pattern is a good fit before making the move
  • Given the export charges in the middle of the day, we recommend thinking about whether you're well suited to this tariff before joining
