What am I agreeing to when I join?
Joining the Energex residential two-way trial tariff involves both a request to Amber to change your network tariff and agreement to the trial’s participation and information-sharing conditions.
The separate request process is where you confirm your choice. Before doing so, read the information below and the full Energex trial terms.
What information is shared, and why?
By joining the two-way trial tariff, Energex is able access to relevant customer account information, including consumption and relevant metering data, and information supplied in application forms and surveys. This can include information identifying you or your property and your contact details.
Energex uses the information to conduct and evaluate the trial, understand how customers use electricity and respond to the tariff, and inform the design of future network tariffs. The trial terms refer to future tariff submissions from mid-2030.
The information-sharing purpose is broader than simply completing the tariff switch: it includes trial research and evaluation.
Which organisations may receive or use my information?
The trial terms provide for collection, use and disclosure by Energex, including its affiliated organisations, research partners and market research companies, for conducting and analysing the trial.
The defined affiliated organisations include:
- Energy Queensland, Energex’s holding company, and Ergon Energy Corporation.
- The trial’s marketing and advertising providers.
- Information technology providers.
- Meter installation and data providers.
- Economic analysis providers.
These are organisations involved in the trial. This does not mean that other participating households are given your identifiable account information.
Can trial results be shared or published?
Yes. The terms allow de-identified results—with names, addresses and contact details removed—to be shared with regulators, government bodies, trial participants, published research and other entities as required or authorised by law.
That is separate from the use of identifiable information by the organisations conducting and analysing the trial, as described above.
Will I need to answer surveys or be contacted?
Participation includes agreeing to take part in surveys and relevant data-collection activities. Energex may contact you for feedback, research or trial communications by email, SMS or post. The trial terms do not specify a fixed number of surveys or a fixed time commitment.
Keep your account and contact information up to date so trial communications can reach you.
Can I join without agreeing to the trial’s data-sharing requirements?
The trial requires agreement to these conditions. If you do not want to agree, do not submit consent to join. If you have already joined and want to leave, contact Amber to arrange withdrawal.
Leaving the trial does not by itself establish that information already collected will be deleted. For questions about information already held, access, correction or privacy complaints, see Energex’s privacy statement.
Joining and opting out
How do I request a switch, and is a place guaranteed?
Use the tariff-change request process provided by Amber and review the rates, terms and privacy information before giving consent. If you're eligible, you will see this in the Amber app.
The tariff is capped at 5,000 customers in total across Energex, including customers of other retailers. Places are not guaranteed. Amber will submit tariff requests in the order we receive them.
Reading this FAQ or opening a request screen does not reserve a place. You need to submit a request with your consent, and Energex must accept the site. Taking no action on an invitation leaves your current tariff unchanged.
When will the new rates start?
Submitting a request does not immediately change your tariff. The switch requires Energex’s acceptance and completion of the tariff change. Amber will confirm the effective date; a request does not guarantee a switch before November.
Only exports after the tariff takes effect and within the eligible seasonal window receive the network bonus. Do not assume the switch or reward can be backdated.
Can I opt out, or am I locked in for 12 months?
You can request to leave this trial. Energex’s trial terms allow Amber to withdraw a participating site by written notice, including a reason and the eligible standard tariff to apply afterwards.
Email info@amber.com.au to request withdrawal. We will arrange the change and confirm its effective date. The change is not instant, the available tariffs to return to will be 3900 and 6900.
How long does the trial last, and can it change?
The trial is scheduled to end on 30 June 2027. Energex can extend it, end it early or cancel a site’s participation by giving reasonable notice. If it extends the trial, it may also change the tariff structure or components with reasonable notice.
If a site stops meeting the eligibility criteria, Energex may cancel its participation immediately by notifying Amber. At the end of participation, Amber must nominate an eligible standard network tariff for the site.
The trial does not change your standard network connection contract.
