Best practises for incompatible EV’s and wall chargers

Follow

This article is for customers whose EV or wall charger isn’t currently compatible with Amber for EVs automation but are an Amber customer.

Quick summary

  • If automation isn’t possible, you can still reduce costs by using schedules, off-peak/low-price windows, and manual start/stop based on the Amber price and solar conditions.

Before you start: confirm what’s supported

  1. Check whether your vehicle / charger is currently supported in: What vehicles and wall-chargers are supported?

Best practices (when your setup is incompatible)

1. Use your EV / charger’s built-in schedule

Set a charging schedule inside:

  • your vehicle settings (preferred), or
  • your charger app (if it supports scheduling)

Suggested approach:

  • Pick 2–3 recurring windows that usually have cheaper or greener energy (e.g., late morning on sunny days if you have solar, and/or overnight if prices are often low).
  • Keep the window wide enough that the car can finish charging even if charging starts later than expected.
  • Check the Amber app on the live prices screen to see what the price forecast is looking like.
  • Typically the cheapest part of the day for power is midday.

2. Keep “smart” controls to one system at a time

Avoid running multiple “smart charging” systems together as they can fight each other with competing controls.

If you’re testing automation and things look unreliable, temporarily turn off all but one controller.

3. Make charging more reliable

  • Ensure firmware/app for your charger and vehicle are up to date.
  • Make sure the charger has a strong, stable Wi‑Fi / cellular connection (poor connectivity can break remote control).
  • If the charger frequently drops offline, test with a different network (e.g., hotspot) to confirm whether it’s a connectivity issue.

4. If you have solar or a home battery

  • If charging from excess solar only is important, consider using your vehicle’s charge current limits and schedule to avoid importing from the grid.
