Do I need to do anything?
In most cases, no—we'll be in touch before anything happens and let you know when your meter is being upgraded.
That said, there are a couple of things worth knowing upfront:
Defects and wiring issues. Sometimes a technician will find a problem with your wiring or meter box that needs to be fixed before the smart meter can go in. If that happens, we'll let you know what's needed and who's responsible for sorting it. Homeowners need to organise and cover the cost of repairs; renters, that falls to your landlord.
Access. The technician usually won't need you home—but if your meter is inside, or access is tricky, someone over 18 will need to be there. If there are any hazards, locked gates, or anything else we should know about, get in touch with us at info@amber.com.au ahead of time.
Life support equipment. If anyone at your property relies on life support equipment, please let us know as soon as possible at info@amber.com.au. We'll plan the installation safely with you.
Tariff protection. Under national rules, you're protected from retail tariff changes for two years once your basic meter is switched—unless you tell us otherwise. If there's any chance you could end up on a demand tariff, you won't be billed on that rate without your consent first.
Does it cost anything?
No upfront cost. The meter and installation are covered as part of the rollout.
⚠️ Important: If there are issues with your wiring or meter box, these must be fixed before installation can proceed.
- Homeowners are responsible for organising and paying for these repairs
- This is not covered by the rollout
Can I opt out?
Smart meter installation is mandatory under national rules, so you can't opt out of the upgrade itself.
However, you can opt out of the meter's remote communication capabilities—that means having the SIM card removed, so the meter won't send data automatically. If that's something you'd like to explore, get in touch with us at info@amber.com.au.
