What is the Legacy Meter Replacement Program?

Follow

The Legacy Meter Replacement Program is part of a national initiative to upgrade older electricity meters to smart meters by 2030.

This follows a rule introduced by the Australian Energy Market Commission in November 2024 to support a more efficient rollout of smart meters across Australia.

As your electricity retailer, Amber Electric is responsible for arranging the installation of a new smart meter with remote communication capability at your property.

You can learn more about your rights during the rollout via the Australian Energy Regulator.

So… why smart meters?

Energy has changed a lot. Older meters weren't built for things like solar, batteries, or flexible pricing.

Think of it like upgrading from a flip phone to a smartphone—same job, just way smarter.

What does a smart meter actually do?

A smart meter:

  • Tracks your energy use throughout the day
  • Sends readings automatically (no more manual reads)
  • Unlocks better insights and smarter energy options

Smart meters + Amber just work ⚡

A smart meter is what unlocks Amber.

It gives you access to real-time wholesale prices, so you can use energy when it's cheapest—not just pay a flat rate all day.

  • Pay the real price of energy: Your usage is tracked every 30 minutes, so you're paying what energy actually costs in that moment.
  • Dodge price spikes: Prices can jump (sometimes over $3/kWh). Shift your usage and avoid peak times.
  • Automate with SmartShift: Got a battery? It'll charge when prices are low and use/export when they're high.
  • Get more from your solar: Earn real-time wholesale feed-in rates, not a fixed tariff.

Smart meter = control, transparency, and smarter energy bills.
