Checklist to avoid delays

Update your inverter's firmware

Your inverter will need to meet the minimum firmware version requirement to enable SmartShift to work properly on your device. The good news is that you can update the firmware yourself via the FoxCloud app.

Here's how to update your inverter's firmware:

  1. Log into the FoxCloud 2.0 smartphone app.
  2. Tap on Devices, then tap on Inverter.
  3. Tap on the Upgrade flag.
  4. Tap on the versions that have a red dot next to them.
  5. Tap Upgrade Now to upgrade the firmware as required. There’s also a video of the process from FoxESS here.

Check your FoxCloud 2.0 profile details

We may ask you to provide your inverter's serial number and your FoxCloud 2.0 email address so it's important that you know which email address is entered on your profile.

Here's how to check your FoxCloud 2.0 profile:

  1. Log into the FoxCloud 2.0 smartphone app.
  2. Navigate to the Me tab.
  3. Tap on your username at the top to see your account details.
  4. Scroll down to the email field and make sure your email is entered correctly.
  5. Update the email address field if it is empty or incorrect.
It doesn't need to match your Amber email address.

Ensure the Detailed Address in FoxCloud 2.0 matches your Amber address

If you have more than one plant under a single FoxCloud 2.0, then you will need to make sure the Detailed Address in FoxCloud 2.0 matches the Property Address on the corresponding Amber account for each system you'd like to enrol.

Step 1: Locate your Property Address in the Amber app

  1. Log into the Amber smartphone app.
  2. Navigate to the Settings tab.
  3. Under Property Details, take note of your Property Address exactly as it appears.

Step 2: Update the Detailed Address in FoxCloud 2.0

  1. Log into the FoxCloud 2.0 smartphone app.
  2. Select the site/home you want to enrol in SmartShift.
  3. Tap on ⋯ and then tap Edit Home.
  4. Scroll down to the Detailed Address and update it to match your Amber Property Address.
  5. Tap Complete.

Enrolling multiple devices on multiple Amber accounts? Repeat these steps for each site, making sure each Home's Detailed Address matches the corresponding Amber Property Address.

How do I sign up to Amber for Batteries?

If you haven't already provided the device details during sign-up for your Amber account, you can register it in the Amber app.

⚡ How to register your device:

  1. Log into the Amber app on your smartphone.
  2. Navigate to the Devices tab and tap on "Enrol solar and/or battery".
  3. Select the type of device(s) you have and then tap "Continue".
👉 If your solar panels connect directly into your battery system (DC-coupled), select “Just Batteries.”
👉 If you have a separate solar inverter from another brand (AC-coupled), select “Batteries & Solar.”
  4. Select the FoxESS battery picture and then tap "Continue".
  5. Fill in the form and tick the box to confirm that you agree to the SmartShift terms and conditions.
  6. Tap "Add my Device" and then you will be redirected to the Fox Cloud platform.
  7. Enter your username and password for the FoxCloud platform. Tick the boxes next to Data access and Device control, and tap Authorise.

  1. If everything goes well, you’ll see a message like “Authorisation successful.” You should then be redirected back to the Amber app, where the screen below should appear.

There's a problem with my registration, what do I do now?

Below you'll find the most common errors and how you can resolve them.

Issue detected - We couldn't connect to your FoxESS account. We need your FoxCloud email to authorize the connection.

If you are unable to complete step 7, where you log into the FoxCloud platform to authorise our system to access your device, then you may see an error in Devices tab of the Amber app.

Here's how you can resolve this issue:

Step 1: Check and/or update the email address enter in the FoxCloud 2.0 app.

To do this you need to:

  1. Log into the FoxCloud 2.0 smartphone app.
  2. Navigate to the Me tab (usually in the bottom right).
  3. Tap on your username at the top to see your account details.
  4. Scroll down to the Email field.
If the email field is empty, you'll need to enter your preferred email address. It doesn't need to match your Amber account email address.

Step 2: Enter the email address and serial number in the Amber app.

To do this you need to:

  1. Log into the Amber smartphone app and navigate to the Devices tab.
  2. Tap Follow step-by-step guide and read the instructions.
  3. Enter your inverter's serial number.
  4. Enter the email address which is on your profile in FoxCloud 2.0.
This is case sensitive so please enter it exactly as it is entered on FoxCloud.
  5. Tap Submit and we'll automatically retry your registration.

Issue detected - Your inverter needs a firmware update before setup can continue.

This happens when your device is not on the minimum firmware version required for the SmartShift automation to function. The good news is that this error automatically triggers a notification to the manufacturer to request they update the firmware on your specific device.

To speed things up, you may be able to complete the update yourself via the FoxCloud 2.0 app:

We run a once daily check each morning for firmware, so your existing registration should progress automatically the day after the firmware update has been completed.

The Amber app shows a different serial number to mine. How do I change it?

Don't worry, this is completely normal and expected!

When you register your FoxESS system, we retrieve the official device details directly and automatically from the monitoring platform once you are logged in. We do not require you to enter your serial number manually. Instead, you'll see a temporarily a placeholder for the serial number. There is no need for you to change this value; the correct, official device serial number will automatically replace this placeholder once the data is imported from the FoxESS monitoring platform.

FoxESS support is currently in beta. What's that mean?

When we say FoxESS support is currently in beta, it means the integration is still new and we’re working on fine-tuning the automation. Some parts might not run perfectly just yet, but our engineers are keeping a close eye on all enrolled sites and raising any issues with the manufacturer’s technical team so they can be fixed.

We can’t give an exact date for when beta will finish, but we won’t move forward until we’re confident the automation is running smoothly for the vast majority of sites. In the meantime, you can still use all the features in the Devices tab once your device is successfully enrolled.

What happens after I sign up?

We've published this guide on the Amber for Batteries Enrolment Process if you want to take a deep dive.

After you've signed up to Amber and submitted your battery details via the website or app, we will check that your site is all set up to join the SmartShift program. This includes making sure that you've officially transferred to Amber as your electricity retailer, that you've got a smart meter installed and that your meter is configured to record solar exports. All this has to happen before we can continue with the battery enrolment.
