We can now provide solar curtailment for eligible Fronius Inverter set-ups: this means we can reduce your solar production to avoid exporting to the grid whenever the Feed-in Tariff drops below 0c/kWh (increasing your overall average FiT). Read more about solar curtailment here.
Solar curtailment is suitable for any Amber customer who has a compatible solar inverter, regardless of whether you also have a home battery.
Which Fronius systems are compatible?
Currently, only sites with 1 Fronius inverter are compatible for curtailment via SmartShift.
Specifically we can control the following models:
- Galvo, Primo, Symo and Eco SnapINverter series
- Primo and Symo GEN24 series
-
Tauro and Tauro Eco
If you have a Fronius inverter and another brand of inverter, you are still eligible.
Should you have more than one Fronius inverter, you have an option to buy a Village Energy Voltello LinkPro solar curtailment device. Get 10% off using code 10FORME. Village Energy can help you set this up.
Whilst the Village Energy device still won't allow you to enrol in our SmartShift™ program, we're highlighting this as a solution with similar features.
If you have a Fronius consumption meter you will have ‘load-following curtailment’, if you don’t, we'll enable ‘on/off curtailment.’
If you don't have a consumption meter when you register with us but add one later, please contact us at smartshift@amber.com.au so we can update your configuration.
If your system was installed before 2019, you'll need to update your firmware by following this video, contacting your installer or Fronius tech support on +61 3 8340 2910
How does this work with my battery (If I have one)?
If you have a Tesla Powerwal, SolarEdge, Sungrow or AlphaESS battery not already enrolled in SmartShift, please enrol your battery first, and add your Fronius inverter once that enrolment is complete.
If you have a BYD HVM or HVS series battery, controllable through a Primo or Symo GEN24 series Fronius Inverter, you can sign up for our Fronius X BYD battery control trial when you enrol your Fronius Inverter.
If you have a battery of another brand, we can only provide curtailment for now and will let you know if/when we can integrate with other battery brands.
How do I enrol my Fronius inverter?
If you haven't already provided the inverter details during sign-up for your Amber account, follow these steps via the Amber app:
- Download the Amber app.
- Log into the Amber app using the email and password created on registration.
- Head to the Devices tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Fronius as your inverter brand.
- Enter your Serial Number and the email you use to log in to Fronius Solar.web.
If you are already enrolled in SmartShift, navigate to the SmartShift settings (at the bottom of the screen on the Devices tab), and select “Add another device” at the bottom of the settings screen.
Where to find your serial number?
The inverter serial number can be found on the bottom (Snap) or side (Gen 24) of your inverter, e.g.: 30103348 (the serial number will always have 8 numerical digits).
What happens after I sign up?
We've published this guide on the Amber for Batteries Enrolment Process if you want to take a deep-dive.
After you've signed up to Amber and submitted your battery details via the website or app, we will check that your site is all set up to join the SmartShift™ program. This includes making sure that you've officially transferred to Amber as your electricity retailer, that you've got a smart meter installed and that your meter is configured to record solar exports. All this has to happen before we can continue with the inverter enrolment.
Once your site is good to go, our Operations team will request access to the inverter control from Fronius. The team will then be alerted if there are any issues with the enrolment. Please see the below for common issues that may delay the enrolment of your battery.
How long does it take to get my Fronius inverter enrolled?
Once you have completed the Fronius device form, enrolment generally takes 1-2 weeks. Fronius only processes enrolments from us once per week. If there are issues with the information provided you may have to wait until the next week's processing batch to reprocess your enrolment.
You'll know that you're successfully enrolled as you'll be able to see your system curtailing when the FiT is negative. You'll also see a curtailment status notification on the main prices screen in the Amber app, and have the ability to turn solar curtailment on and off from within the device tab or SmartShift settings.
Checklist to avoid delays during enrolment
Ensure your inverter is online
If you can see solar production data on Fronius Solar.web, then your inverter is online.
Follow this video to get your inverter online.
Ensure your system is registered with Fronius Solar.web
Fronius systems must be registered with Fronius Solar.web before we can onboard your system. If your system was recently installed, check with your installer to see if they can assist you.
Follow this video to register your system with Fronius Solar.web.
Ensure your inverter firmware is up to date
Your Fronius interver firmware must be up to date before we can onboard your system. Normally Fronius can do this remotely when they process your device enrolment, but if your inverter is more than 5 years old they may not be able to do this.
Follow this video to update your firmware.
