Installing an EV charger in Queensland under Energex: what you need to know

Follow

The below relates to Energex customers installing a new wall charger only

This is in response to information from their website here: https://www.energex.com.au/contractors/electrical-contractors/ev-charging-and-connections

Do I need to do anything to get it connected? Your electrician handles most of it. They submit something called an Electrical Work Request (EWR) to Energex (the network in QLD), which kicks off the connection process on the network side. You don't need to lodge this yourself.

Will I need a new meter? It depends on what you already have. If you've got a smart meter, you're generally good to go. Energex picks up the request automatically and schedules the work. If you don't have a smart meter yet, one will need to be installed first.

How long does the connection take? Once Energex receives the EWR, they aim to complete the work within 10 business days. They'll send you a text message with a date once it's scheduled. That said, as of mid-2026 Energex is dealing with a backlog due to high demand and some hardware supply issues, so it may take a little longer than usual. We'll keep you updated if we hear more.

What if my electrician is also doing other work at the same time, like a supply upgrade? If your electrician is doing additional work alongside the EVSE connection (for example, upgrading your supply to 3-phase), the process is a bit different. Your electrician should know which type of request to submit. If you're unsure, get in touch with us and we can help sort it out.

I'm on a controlled load or secondary tariff. Does that change anything? Yes, slightly. If your EVSE is being set up on a secondary tariff (or you're moving away from one), there's a bit more to it on the metering side. Your electrician's EWR will trigger the right actions, but if things aren't moving as expected, reach out to us and we'll look into it.

Who do I contact if things aren't progressing? Get in touch with our support team. We can check where things are at and follow up with Energex if needed.
