Tesla Enrolment Steps
Before you start
Make sure you're on Amber app version 6.4.0 or above. You can check your version number at the top of the Settings page, and update via the App Store if needed.
Enrolment steps
- Open the Amber app and go to the Devices tab (second icon along the bottom).
- From here, the next step depends on whether you already have a device linked:
- No devices linked yet: tap Automate EV Charging.
- Already have a device: tap Devices in the top left, then under More tap Add another device, then tap Automate EV Charging.
- Tap Enrol Tesla.
- Review and confirm the tick boxes.
- Tap Begin Linking. This will prompt you to confirm the pairing in the Tesla app.
- Let Amber know about your current charging setup.
- Complete the automated checks.
- Wait for a notification confirming your EV charging is ready.
- Tap Finish Setup to get started.
- Enable EV Automation and configure your Charging Controls.
Tesla Common Issues
My EV is registered elsewhere
This usually happens when a Tesla account is shared or the vehicle has been charged at another Amber address.
If you think someone else has your car registered, ask them to remove you as a driver from their account, then try the enrolment steps again. If the problem persists, contact us.
If you've charged at someone else's Amber address, contact us with your VIN number and the address you charged at so we can investigate.
My Tesla account is registered in another country
Create an Australian Tesla account and share your vehicle with it. Once Amber has completed the pairing, you can switch the Tesla back to your original account. Contact us if you need further help.
I added the wrong Tesla account
This is common in multi-Tesla households. Contact us to reset your onboarding, then try again with the correct account.
Failed to initiate EV preflight checks
This usually happens if Tesla permissions have been changed. Follow the enrolment steps above again to resolve it.
Why does Amber need my Tesla's location?
Amber only controls charging when your car is plugged in at home. Location data is used to confirm whether your Tesla is at your home address. If it's not, Amber won't attempt to direct its charging.
This means you can plug in at a fast charger or at work without Amber competing with another charging manager. The location data Amber receives is a simple yes/no, not a GPS signal.
My Tesla is registered in another country?
A workaround for this is for you to create an Australian Tesla account then share your vehicle with it.
Once we have performed the pairing you are able to switch the Tesla back to your original account.
I want to leave Amber for EVs
