What is Amber for EVs?

Follow

Smartening up EV charging has been a core part of our mission since we started Amber. EVs are one of the biggest users of household electricity, and with uptake in Australia growing fast, shifting when you charge can make a real difference to how much renewable energy you use and what you pay for power.

Read on to find out how you can get the most out of Amber for EVs.

Key features

Amber for EVs gives you a simple way to charge smarter without the hassle. Here's what it can do:

  • Solar charging: Automatically charge from your excess solar only (if you have it), without extra hardware or third-party apps. A simple way to get more free kilometres.
  • Cheap and green charging: Automatically take advantage of times when grid energy is cheapest and greenest, and stop charging when it's expensive. Great if your solar falls short or you don't have panels.
  • Recovery charging: Set a minimum comfortable battery level and Amber will charge faster when you need to get back up to it.

What makes Amber for EVs different?

It might sound strange, but we want to help you do more of what benefits you, not us. Whether that's charging from your own solar rather than grid energy we could sell you, or even paying you to charge when wholesale prices go negative (yes, that happens, and when it does, we pay you to use energy).

This comes down to our subscription model. We don't make money on each kilowatt hour you use like other retailers, so we can stay focused on helping you get the most out of your setup. We're not encouraging you to charge overnight to keep coal plants profitable either (we don't have any).

Share your feedback

If you have a compatible EV or charger, we'd love to hear how you're finding it. You can share your thoughts anytime via the feedback widget in the Amber for EVs section of the app.
