Compatibility guide - What EVs and chargers are supported by A4EV?

Follow

Amber for EVs uses live price signal charge your car at the cheapest, greenest times. To do that, we need to be able to talk to either your car directly or your wall charger. Here's where we're at right now.

Supported electric vehicles

Tesla

  • Tesla Model 3 (all years)
  • Tesla Model Y (all years)
  • Tesla Model S (2021 onwards)
  • Tesla Model X (2021 onwards)

If you've got one of these, you don't need a smart wall charger for A4EV to work. We can schedule charging through Tesla's own API.

Also supported

Amber for EVs now supports the following brands through a third-party service called Enode:

  • MG
  • Audi
  • Xpeng

A heads up: excess solar charging is not available for cars connected through Enode. Enode can schedule charging during cheap or green grid times, but it can't yet respond fast enough to soak up extra solar coming off your roof in real time. If excess solar charging is important to you, this option may not be the right fit.

Supported through wall chargers

If you don't drive an EV compatible with Amber, we connect through your wall charger instead. The wall charger we currently support is:

  • MyEnergi Zappi v2 (as part of our ARENA-funded trial)

The Zappi v2 was added to A4EV through an ARENA trial we're running. If you've got one already installed, or you're planning to install one, get in touch and we'll let you know about availability.

We're testing other OCPP-compatible wall chargers, but they're not generally available yet. If you've got a different charger and want to be notified when we add support, you can join the waitlist here: https://amberelectric.typeform.com/to/KGkXUrq2

What's not supported

We get asked about these a lot, so here's the honest answer:

  • Pre-2021 Tesla Model S and Model X — older versions of the Tesla API don't give us what we need to control charging reliably.
  • Multiple vehicles on one account — we can only manage one vehicle per Amber account right now. If you've got two, only one can be connected to A4EV.
  • Sigenergy DC charger — not currently supported.
  • Tesla wall charger paired with a non-Tesla EV — Tesla wall chargers only talk to Tesla cars in a way we can use, so this combo doesn't work for A4EV.

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G / V2X)

We're part of an ARENA-funded V2G trial which you can read more about here

Why don't you support my EV or charger?

For A4EV to save you money, we need real-time, reliable control of when your car charges. That means either a direct API into the car (which not many manufacturers offer well yet) or an OCPP-compatible smart charger that responds the way we need it to. We test every option carefully before adding it to our supported list, because a setup that drops out or charges at the wrong time costs you money, and that's the opposite of what A4EV is for.

We're actively expanding the list. The fastest way to be notified when your car or charger is added is to join the waitlist - https://amberelectric.typeform.com/to/KGkXUrq2
