Our price and solar-based charging technology Amber for EVs has launched!
Smartening up EV charging has been a core part of our mission since we started Amber. EVs are one of the biggest users of electricity, so shifting when we charge EVs can make a big difference to how much green energy you use and the cost of your power.
The only thing that’s changed in the six years since Amber’s inception is the number of people buying EVs - which has increased massively!
We’re now developing our own EV charging-optimisation technology, as we have already done for home batteries.
Amber for EVs is all about making your EV charging smarter and simpler, allowing you to make the best use of your own solar - or the solar that's flooding the grid.
It's purposely-designed to get you as many free or super-cheap charging opportunities as you can get.
And the tech is also free to take advantage of for Amber customers!
Some of the key benefits of Amber for EVs include:
-
Easy excess solar charging: a smart way to get more free kilometres - A4EVs enables you to charge from your excess solar only (if you have it) without having to invest in extra hardware or subscribe to other apps. Put more of your solar into your car
-
Charge at the best times: Automatically take advantage of times when energy from the grid is cheapest and greenest (handy if your solar falls short, or if you don't have solar)
- Smart battery coordination: We're Australia's most popular battery manager and so it only made sense we make an EV charging solution that works well with your home battery (if you have one). Choose where your solar goes first (battery or EV) and don't drain your home battery when you charge your car.
- Recovery charging: Tell us your minimum comfortable battery charge level and we’ll make sure you charge faster when you need to get back up to that level
Plus:
-
See how much each charge costs you
-
Avoid charging in demand windows (if you’re on a demand tariff)
You can take advantage of the features listed above as an Amber for EVs:
- A Tesla Model 3
- A Tesla Model Y
- A post 2021 Tesla Model S or X
These represent the most common EVs on the road in Australia and make up around 95% of all Teslas in Australia.
If you don't have a Tesla, we will be further expanding our list of Amber for EVs-compatible EVs and chargers in the coming months, pending the outcome of some charger compatibility testing that's currently underway.
If you have an OCPP-compatible charger but are interested in becoming an early Amber for EVs adopter, please consider enrolling and adding yourself to our testing waitlist so we can trial Amber for EVs with your device. At present, we will be inviting OCPP-charger customers to enrol for testing on an invite-only basis. Learn more about OCPP here.
We'll expand our list of Amber for EVs-compatible EVs and chargers in the coming months.
If you have a compatible EV, all you need to do to get enrolled is:
- Check you're using the latest version of the Amber app version. You can update your Amber app via the app store if needed.
-
Open the Amber app
- Head to Devices
